PAIN MANAGEMENT GROUP

Living with acute, continuous, or chronic pain can have a short- and long-term psychological impact including depression and anxiety. Research shows that psychotherapy or talk therapy can help people with pain with the following:
  • Supporting people on how to better live with ongoing chronic pain.
  • Improving coping skills and learning positive language and thinking skills
  • Support in decreasing catastrophic thoughts associated with pain
  • Reduction support and value exploration around beliefs about reliance on pain medications
  • Supporting knowledge and practical reframing skills on how to regulate pain flare-ups

Pain Management group therapy can play an important role in identifying maladaptive thought processes and beliefs that have become part of your dominant narrative and working together to challenge those thoughts and create more useful strategies.

Some effective interventions include teaching relaxation techniques, deep breathing, journaling, restructuring daily activities to accommodate the need for breaks, adaptive tools and a variety of other community targeted resources and alternative innovations.

At Barnett Counseling Services the Goal of Pain Management Group Therapy is to generate hope, promote insight and self-reflection when triggered by pain and learn new coping strategies while in a safe therapeutic environment. Another benefit of group therapy is that you will have supportive peers who are going through very similar situations and can add to your “toolbox” of skills from their own life experiences and narratives.
